Work Methods

These are the different types of classes you can take at Sciences Po. Every course has a syllabus with information on assessment and schedule. It’s linked to the pedagogical model of the program followed.

Lecture

Lectures are one of the great educational traditions of Sciences Po. Lectures are for large groups and are almost always given in one of the institution’s large amphitheaters. Delivered by a professor, it is an invitation to reflection and further reading. The class gathers once a week over a twelve-week period and is always linked to a methodology tutorial. The evaluation may be a final exam.

Methodology Tutorial

The methodology tutorial is the class linked with a lecture and occurs concurrently but with a smaller group of around twenty students. It allows students to acquire knowledge and familiarise themselves with methodology through participation in the tutorial and completing exercises at home. The tutorial group meets once a week for 12 weeks. It is led by a tutor who is also a go-to person for students about the course in general. Continuous assessment determines the mark for the tutorial, involving a series of exercises that students must complete either in class or at home.

Seminar

A specialist in the field typically teaches this more specialized class, focusing on developing questions and themes integral to the discipline while also emphasizing diverse methodology. The class comprises two parts: a session dedicated to discussions between students and the professor. Evaluation of the course may involve questions on the assigned readings and one or more written exercises completed at home.

Elective Class

Like the other types of class, it involves 12 two-hour sessions and meets once a week. It is in small groups of around twenty students and requires a great deal of participation. Students must complete exercises both in class and at home, constituting the components of the final grade.

Student Card

You will receive your student card after completing your online administrative registration, which includes submitting all supporting documents and paying your tuition fees. For degree-seeking students, your student card is valid for the duration of your studies. Every year, you will receive a new stamp that validates your registration for the current academic year. Your student card includes your family name as well as your unique Sciences Po student ID number (number of your student card).
