HGGS Membership and DAAD GSSP Scholarships 2020 Germany

Applications are invited for 15 Fully Funded HGGS Membership and DAAD GSSP Scholarships 2020 at Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HGGS), Heidelberg UniversityGermany.

Details of Scholarship

We are looking for highly motivated, excellent doctoral applicants with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. 

The HGGS Graduate School provides a structured, interdisciplinary program in the Humanities and Social Sciences for the formation of excellent doctoral researchers. It fosters innovative, interdisciplinary research projects at Heidelberg University and offers its members a dynamic and collaborative research environment within a broad national and international network. HGGS members actively contribute to the exchange across the disciplines and benefit from a large selection of interdisciplinary seminars and expert courses in English and German. 

Thematically, the research projects should contribute to the Field of Focus 3, “Cultural dynamics in globalized worlds”, and/or Field of Focus 4, “Self-regulation and regulation: individuals and societies”. 

The HGGS Membership is foreseen for three years with the option of an additional year. The DAAD-GSSP Scholarships for international applicants are foreseen for four years.

Eligibility for Scholarship

To be eligible for HGGS Membership and DAAD GSSP Scholarships, applicants must:

  • Hold an M.A. or equivalent in one of the disciplines of the Humanities and Social Sciences or Law with an above-average grade (at least 1.7, 5.5, B+, 2+, “magna cum laude”, or similar)
  • The transcript has to indicate at least four years of study at the university level
  • Excellent knowledge of English or German, in addition to a further language, is expected
  • Knowledge of German can be acquired or improved during the first year of the program
  • Importantly, applicants are expected to contact a potential supervisor at Heidelberg University in order to discuss their research plans and to obtain a supervision agreement

Application procedure of Scholarship

To apply for HGGS Membership and DAAD GSSP Scholarships 2020, applicants are required to submit:

  • Completed cover page (download HERE or Word-format from heiBOX)
  • Letter of intention, with a brief description of the qualifications, academic objectives and the research project (max. 2 pages)
  • Curriculum Vitae with information about the academic career, achieved grades, research projects, and research experience, publications (if any)
  • Project description of max. 5 pages in German or English (including research plans and objectives, critical approach, data, methods, theoretical focus)
  • The timescale for the research project
  • Transcripts (Bachelor and Master)
  • Letters of recommendation: 1 letter (formless) required for HGGS membership; 2 letters on the DAAD form required for DAAD-GSSP applications 
  • Written supervision agreement by a Professor or PD at Heidelberg University. Information.
